Meet Helen
Helen is in her forties and has always been someone who just "gets stuff done". Exercise was the exception. She'd never been sedentary, but she'd always struggled to be consistent, and over time she found herself moving less and less.
The Challenge
Everyday movement started to feel harder. She was more tired, less motivated and frustrated with herself. In her words:
"I realised my get up and go had got up.. and gone."
She knew what she wanted: to move more, get stronger and stay mobile. She was just as honest about what had held her back. She was great at excuses, not very self-motivated, and wouldn't know what to do exercising on her own.
The Turning Point
Unique U was recommended to Helen. When she met CJ, she explained that above everything else, she needed accountability.
CJ recommended Small Group Personal Training (SGPT). It turned out to be exactly the right fit:
- A group, so she could meet people and feel part of something
- Small enough that coaches could spot when she needed guidance or a push
- Coaches who reminded her what she was meant to be doing
Alongside the sessions, the team gave her regular check-ins and advice on nutrition.
The Results
At 12 weeks, Helen was training twice a week before work. She'd tried exercises she'd never done before, was eating better, had lost weight and was being consistent. As a gym novice, she didn't feel out of place.
A year on, she's still going:
"I've been twice a week consistently, never in my 40+ years on earth have I exercised that consistently before."
She puts it down to the coaches, who she says clearly care and want members to succeed, and to the sense of belonging that comes from seeing the same friendly faces every week.
What This Could Mean for You
If you've always been "good at excuses" when it comes to exercise, Helen's story shows that the fix isn't more willpower. It's the right setup: coaching, a small group and people who notice when you're not there.
Your results will be your own, but you won't be working it out alone.
